Essay on Hanneli Mustaparta

The Essay Question: What does the fashion blogger (Hanneli Mustaparta)'s style tell us about the meaning and function of fashion?

Effortless elegance, sophistication are what appeal to most people in the 21st century. Hanneli Mustaparta precisely displays these qualities through her Parisian chic style of dressing of dressing. The overall impression that she portrays inspires one to discover more about her amiable personality. As what Emile Durkheim theorised, Hanneli has adopted the Parisian chic style - influenced by the society’s trend - into her choice of garments. Yet she was able to transform her fashion style in such as way that it also brings out her personality - which has influenced her taste of preferences.

One could identify Hanneli’s dressing to Parisian’s fashion, yet Parisian fashion does not seem to entirely define Hanneli’s style and personality. This can suggests that Hanneli choose a Parisian chic of dressing as it looks visually pleasing to her and she intentionally followed the Parisian trend. However, it can also be seen that she is a non-conformist who adopted the Parisian chic fashion and weaved it into her identity, a Norwegian. This is possible because, as a Norwegian, she would have inevitably been exposed to European aspects of art and fashion. For example, the weaving and needlework used to make the garments she wears are very common in the Nordic culture. Hanneli can be often be seen wearing knitted sweaters or cardigans, especially during the colder periods of the year. Thus, her style of dressing displays cultural influences from the European society, corresponding to Emile Durkheim’s theory that fashion is a societal construct. Therefore, as Hanneli’s choice of fashion style is impacted by her environment, it can be seen that the purpose of fashion is to reflect one’s roots, as one is often affected and influenced by the society one is in.

Through her style of dressing, it can be seen that Hanneli gains individuality. As theorised by Rene Konig, individuals use fashion to establish their own identity, delineate their own distinctiveness and enhance the meaning of their lives. This is hence seen in Hanneli’s style of dressing, which she uses to create her own unique identity. A distinguishing feature in her fashion style is her Parisian chic dressing, which portrays the image of effortless stylishness and class, and this sets her apart from other models who have a different style of dressing, for instance avant garde. Thus, this corroborates with Konig’s theory and shows that the function of fashion is to enable people to create an identity for themselves.
In choosing a Parisian chic style of dressing, Hanneli creates her own unique identity by bringing out an effortlessly elegant and sophisticated image.
However, despite creating an identity for herself, Hanneli does not appear to bring across any message through her dressing. Authentic reproductions are styles of fashion developed in the past that continue to be worn today because they look aesthetically pleasing, and not because they embody a deeper meaning. She chooses a Parisian chic, effortlessly elegant and sophisticated style of dressing as it looks visually pleasing and not because she wants to bring out any message or meaning through her dressing, besides creating an individual and unique identity for herself. Thus, it can be seen that people may use fashion for aesthetic purposes, but not to reflect or bring out any message or deep meaning.

Hanneli does not have a consistent theme in her dressing.

Therefore, Hanneli’s effortlessly sophisticated, tasteful and Parisian chic fashion style shows that fashion has several meanings and serves many purposes. It reflects one’s cultural roots and background and allows people to build up a unique, individual identity for themselves. On the other hand, it can also be used due to aesthetic value and purposes instead of for bringing out a message or meaning.
